I am experiencing some issues removing the key in my 2002 Boxster S!
Would lubricating the ignition or key resolve the problem?
If someone has some experience with this issue I would appreciate some input here or a call at 508-360-5489!

Sounds like a mechanical issue with the lock. Probably needs to be replaced.

this is a common issue. You may need a new ignition and the part is relatively cheap.

If the steering wheel is not locked the key may not be able to be removed. Try locking the wheel in different positions before turning off the ignition. Hope this may help. Ken

If you are only replacing the electrical portion of the switch (1997-04), the project is quite easy. Simply remove the heater ductwork described in Photo 1 (it should pull out from underneath the dash with a few tugs). Disconnect the electrical plug by pulling it out of the back of the switch. Then, simply unscrew the set screws that hold the electrical portion to the back of the switch, and replace it with a new one. The switch has a locating pin cast into the housing, so there is only one way that it can be put back together.
My 996 had exactly the same issue. I was upside down, head under the dash for at least a day. In the end I could not unscrew the last set screw holding in the tumbler. I put all back together, drove it to Porsche of Norwell. If you comfortable doing your own work, you’ll save serious $. It’s a $5 VW tumbler that’s plastic.

100% you need a new ignition switch. Mine went about a month ago on my 2003 Boxster just before i left for Florida. I had the same experience as Wayne K who commented, could not get the last set screw off and killed my neck under the dash 😂
You can buy the part for $12 on Amazon or an oem porsche genuine for $125 on pelican parts. I disconnected my battery for now and put my trickle charge on and will deal with it in the Spring!

Steve, the ignition switch needs to be replaced. I had the same issue on my Boxster years ago. Common problem and pretty sure there are videos on replacing it.

Most of the time, one needs to replace the ignition switch mechanism attached to the back of the switch, inexpensive part, number is 4A0 905 849B. I wouldn’t put anything in the slot in front for key as this is not going to help with release of same. Regarding the replacement of the switch, one has to remove some panels under dash and be prepared to work on your back for a bit, as it’s a fiddly remove and install but certainly doable. Allow an hour or two.

P.s If key gets stuck beforehand, there is tiny hole under key where one can insert pressure to release key, sometimes have to pry off surround to access.
